Council Overhang, Ottawa Canyon. Fall Colors tour 10-17-2016

Today I just happened to be the one that would lead the Fall Colors Tour. The guests all enjoyed lunch in the main dining room and then boarded a trolley. While aboard the trolley, they did go to the Park's Visitor Center and also the Lock and Dam across the river. Then the trolley came to Ottawa Canyon parking lot. That is when I took them into the canyon.

I will leave you with this: Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same.

What to Bring & Wear

For all Seasons here at Starved Rock State Park I would recommend something different to wear and bring with you for hiking. Right now through the Spring I would recommend to wear waterproof boots or rubber boots (that's what I have). Always good to bring an extra pair of shoes and socks for the ride home. Carry a bottle of water. If it's disposable make sure you are equipped to carry it out. (it seems it gets heavy when it gets empty). We find many empty ones on the trail. Bring a camera, our waterfalls and spring wildflowers are fantastic.

Safety on the Trails

Every year some people have to be rescued while hiking in Starved Rock State Park. Make an informed decision on which trail will suit your ability and your hike will be more enjoyable.
Be sure to ALWAYS:
1. Stay on designated trails, no rock climbing.
2. Tell someone where you are hiking and when you
expect to return.
3. Carry enough water for your entire hike.
4. Carry a cell phone.
5. Don't hike alone
6. Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for hiking.
7. Use maps. These are found at the Lodge and Visitor
Center. We also have large maps located at all the major
intersections in the park.
8. No alcohol on the trails
9. Be sure to be off the trails at dusk.
